Sankalpa Blessings

Out of the blue, on a full-moon day in May 2000, the Buddha Poornima, Satya Sai Baba, appeared in an inner vision and spoke to me for the first time, giving me a life direction. Two years later, He came out of the Bhajan Hall and stood at the mandir, facing in my direction. I sat cross-legged in the front row, facing Him on the mandir, across from the rows of female students. The manuscript was in a pile of loose papers on the tiled cement between the red carpet and me. It didn't surprise me when, on the mandir, SSB started speaking to me in perfect American Sign Language (ASL). He had done this before—the very first time I arrived at His ashram in 1993—but that wasn’t the first time I had seen Him in person, or he had communicated to me in Sign Language. It happened the first time I entered His mandir more than seven years earlier. That story is written in the prologue/ introduction. But it bears a mention in the description of the triple Blessing. It bears mention of the concept that He takes responsibility for his actions. They have meaning even though others ignore the importance of His advent. He stood and faced me while He was on the stage, above the heads of His female students, and what He communicated to me in sign language at that moment did shock me...He spoke (signed), “Put the book together with a binding, prepare it with a front and back cover, I will bless it.” I knew the book was unfinished at that time, hence it was in a pile of loose papers. But the inner voice insisted that I come at that time, even though it was not nearly complete. His task to me was revealed to me the 1st time He ever spoke to me in an inner vision. The next afternoon, with His “signed” directions complete, I received the same token number to enter the mandir as the day before, Sat in the same spot as the day before, de ja vu. He stood in the mandir, facing me, and again, in perfect sign language, said, “Prepare yourself,” “I am coming to you,” “I will bless the book”! Ok, I thought this was it. This moment is the culmination of it all..the idea that He would make a commitment to me, in a real language, and keep it. The contents of the manuscript are the truth of my many dreams and experiences of the last 10 years. Every communication and dialogue with Him culminated in the very next moments, when He “signed” to me, “prepare yourself,” “I am coming to you,” “I will bless the book”! Letting me know ahead of time that He was coming. A miracle dressed in a courtesy. After He “signed” his intention, my spiritual heart began to burn. A cleansing and heat within my spiritual heart so powerful,it kept me still, aware of only Him. Then He turned to sit in His chair on the Mandir for the evening bhajans. (singing) When He began to wave His hands to the music, with each movement of His hands, My heart’s burning would become even more intense as it crescendoed more deeply and intensely with every passing moment for the entire duration of the singing and arthi..(a ritual where flame is used to invoke cleansing and Blessings from a deity) It felt like an eternity while I witnessed my heart burning in the cavity of my chest.. There was nothing else, but My Heart was On Fire. A swirling vortex of heat and molten fire so intense I thought I might die. Nothing else existed. There was only fire and breath. Then He stood up; as the arthi singing began. He turned and faced where I sat across the rows of female students and signed again for the 4th time, in my life to that date, “I am coming now.” The silent fire in my heart reached another level of intensity beyond my capacity to endure, but I was being held up without my conscious effort, enduring it as if my chest were caving in. No time, no voice, no other awareness except my Heart on fire, my eyes on Him as He moved off the Mandir, gliding toward me, with every eye upon Him, I was invisible. He walked straight towards me, holding my gaze until He arrived squarely in front of me, looking deeply into my eyes and smiling. As I held up the recently bound manuscript toward Him, He raised His right Hand in Blessing and then lowered it to rest on the book. But then He raised His hand again, and then again! Three separate times, His Hand Blessing came down on top of the manuscript. With each Blessing creating a “splash of energy” in all directions. Each time His Hand came down, the wave of energy became more intense and transmitted through the pages through my body like 3 giant waves of incandescent energy. It was otherworldly. To my own surprise, I responded fast, holding up the pen I had also placed in front of my crossed legs. The pen, a symbol, came from the “Minister of Justice” offices after I wrote about secular injustices, especially their exclusion of disabled and disenfranchised from legal aid that could address remedies that, without that support, they were in fact abandoned. The Minister of Justice’s response was that he couldn’t help; he didn't have the money to assist people with disabilities with injustices they experienced by perpetrators and the government policies. But his office sent a letter and a pen with the words "Thank you for writing." “Here is a pen to write again”. SSB motioned toward the pen, palm facing it three times, “wait, wait, wait” and shook His head in the ambiguous way Indian cultures wobble their heads—a sign language I could never decipher. He knew that. Then He moved on. The fire in my heart, still burning, finally subsided. That was Nov 12, 2002, after the evening Bhajans. Two days later, no more books were allowed in public darshans after that time due to paper bombs being detonated in other parts of India. I understood then why He insisted I come months before I wanted to, to escape the frigid winter months I dreaded. But I had an unfinished book and a symbolic pen blessed three times by the Avatar…The pen had the “Minister of Justice " office printed on its side. When I finally left the mandir, a longtime resident of the ashram I had never met ran up to me. He knew Satya Sai Baba’s actions well and had witnessed the Blessing. “Satya Sai Baba rarely blesses books more than once.” He went on..“A thrice-blessed book is called a 'Sankalpa Blessing.” A Sankalpa is setting an intention or reciting a mantra, but taking it a step beyond. Creating a Sankalpa is a deeper, more thoughtful, long-term practice. The fellow then handed me a book Satya Sai Baba had blessed for him many years ago, four times. Describing his experience of the event. He said he had run to his room to get me a copy he had made, a divine gift. He reiterated that receiving a four-hand Blessing reflects “the entire truth can be derived within the pages of that which is Blessed 4 times by His hand.” Back in Canada, I placed the Blessed books in my drawer and went on with my life. Writing stopped until a year and a half later when I felt His unmistakable guidance to return to His feet. Unexpectedly, my anti-poverty work company and a short story I had published in a collection of Western devotees' essays—offered to Him during His 75th birthday by the Toronto devotees—opened the door to a long-term “spiritual visa” to India, granted by the Indian High Commission to continue writing.
